Experience and qualifications:
Dr Svane has 25 years experience in marine biology. He has a PhD in marine zoology from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark and a PhD in marine zoology from the University of Göteborg, Sweden where he also obtained a docent degree (Assoc. Prof.). He is educated as a professional diver in the Danish Navy and has maritime qualifications allowing him to captain large yachts and trawler size ships. He has published more than 40 papers in international journals on various aspects of marine zoology and ecology, specialising in the ecology of marine hard substrata and larval ecology. Dr Svane was Associate Professor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for 20 years during which he also held senior lectureships at the University of Tromsø, Norway, and the University of Aarhus, Denmark. He participated in education and research programs in South–East Asia, particularly at various universities in Indonesia. He has tutored many under–graduate and post–graduate students of several nationalities. He moved to Australia in 1998 working for Flinders University and SARDI Aquatic Science. He has supervised numerous honours, MSc and PhD students.
