Keith Rowling

Senior Research Officer, Marine Environment and Ecology

Keith Rowling

Areas of expertise:

Video Assessment of marine benthic systems; Benthic Ecology; Taxonomy of Flora and Fauna in South Australian marine systems, Introduced Species; GIS habitat mapping.

Countries of work experience:

Australia

Experience and qualifications:

Keith has worked in the field of Marine Science since 1992, gaining valuable skills and experience in a variety of areas. Much of this work has been focussed on the assessment and monitoring of South Australia’s marine habitats and has been carried out in estuarine and marine systems within South Australia’s gulfs, coasts, bays and rivers.

His research has primarily been focussed in the field of ecology and benthic assessment methodology, particularly in the context of assessing environmental impacts in marine benthic systems and the impact and eradication of exotic marine pests. This includes the use of rapid assessment techniques such as video and LIT (Line Intercept Transect), using netting and trawling for fish surveys and grabs and corers for infauna sampling. He has extensive experience in scientific diving and the operation of small boats for research purposes. He also has experience in habitat mapping using GIS based information software. Currently he is chief investigator of a project trialling the national Marine Pest Monitoring Manual, providing research support for the Adelaide Coastal Waters Project, aquaculture and dredging environmental assessment projects, and chief investigator of the Caulerpa eradication project.

Previously he has worked on a variety of projects looking at a diverse range of marine systems including seagrass degradation, the reef health of South Australia’s coast, surveys of ports for potential introduced marine pests, plankton surveys and a variety of other field survey projects. Through this work he has gained extensive experience as a researcher and in many ecological sampling techniques.

Prior to working Mr Rowling studied at Flinders University where he obtained a Honours degree in Marine Biology
