Richard Musgrove
Senior Scientist – Seafood Post-Harvest and Value-Adding

Areas of expertise
Seafood post-harvest and value-adding, energetics, biochemistry, physiology, crustacean biology.
Countries of work experience
Australia, New Zealand
Overview of experience and qualifications
After completing an MSc (with Honours) in Zoology in his native New Zealand (1985-1987) he accepted a research position working with a leading freshwater eco-physiologist at the University of Adelaide in South Australia (1988-1989). In 1995, upon completion of a PhD in crustacean energetics (1990-1994), at the University of Adelaide, he joined SARDI as a senior research scientist having obtained a substantial grant from the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation.
While at SARDI, his work has focussed on the energetics, physiology and post-harvest handling of crustaceans (rock lobsters, prawns and crabs) and sea urchins and, more recently, on the development of projects to look at methods to improve the at-sea processing of pilchards (for the human food market). He is actively involved in developing novel systems for value-adding across a variety of species and works closely with industry and other researchers.
To enable research Dr Musgrove has developed a broad network of contacts in a variety of disciplines, ranging from physiology and biochemistry to seafood technology, economics and marketing.
